9 North Street, the Nathaniel Bowditch House, is a National Register property located immediately behind The Witch House, an important tourist attraction. It is on the west side of North Street (State Route 114) between Essex Street and Federal Street. It is a three-story frame building painted blue-grey. Click here for map.
Parking may be available immediately behind the building, on the far side of North Street, or in either direction on Essex Street.
Driving from Logan Airport
- Get onto State Route 1A northbound. Coming from terminals or parking, bear right and then left. Coming from a rental car lot, ask for directions.
- At this point, set your trip odometer to zero.
- Stay on 1A for 13.6 miles, through East Boston, Revere, Lynn and Swampscott and into Salem. Watch out for the following points:
- At 2.9 miles, bear right at a light.
- At 7.9 miles, turn left, choosing the right-hand lane of the two left-turn lanes.
- At 8.0 miles, turn right.
- Join State Route 129.
- At 8.3 miles, stay left.
- At 9.3 miles, 129 diverges; stay on 1A.
- At 12.4 miles, bear right at a light.
- At 12.8 miles, turn left at a light; join State Route 114 westbound.
- At 13.6 miles, 1A and 114 diverge; bear left with 114.
- Follow 114 through a right turn at a light, a left turn at a light, and a right turn.
- At 14.1 miles go straight through the light at the corner of Essex Street, Summer Street (the name of 114 south of Essex) and North Street (the name of 114 north of Essex). The Bowditch House is the second building on the left.
Driving from Downtown Boston
- Get onto I-93 northbound. (Locals may
refer to it as the "Central Artery" or "Big Dig Tunnel.") If
the signs offer the choice, select "To Route 1 North" in preference
or in addition to I-93.
- Two separate portions of I-93 emerge from
a tunnel onto the Zakim Bridge. If you are on the left
portion, exit left onto US Route 1 northbound. If you
are on the right portion, you must remain on I-93 for about 10
miles and then exit onto I-95 and State Route 128 northbound.
If on Route 1, after about 10 miles, exit onto I-95 and State Route 128 northbound.
- Almost immediately 95 and 128 will diverge; stay left on 128.
- In about 3 miles, use Exit 25A and get on State Route 114 eastbound. Set your trip odometer to zero at the end of the exit ramp.
- Follow 114 for 2.5 miles through three 90-degree turns.
- The Bowditch House is on the right near then end of the first block after you cross an overpass.
Driving from the North or West
- Follow I-95 and State Route 128 northbound from the West (or I-95 alone southbound from the North) to the point at which I-95 and 128 diverge, near the border of Lynnfield and Peabody.
- Take 128 northbound to Exit 25A and follow the above directions from Boston.
Commuter Rail from Boston
- All trains leave from North Station, which is at the Fleet Center and accessible by the Green and Orange Lines. Train service is less frequent than bus service. Purchase your ticket before boarding the train to avoid a surcharge. The fare is $3.00. Travel time is 30 minutes.
- Almost all Rockport and Newburyport Line trains stop in Salem, but ask to be sure.
- You are five minutes from our office. After detraining, walk back along the tracks toward the tunnel from which your train emerged. (Some other passengers will probably do the same.) Climb the stairs to the street level.
- Straight ahead, across the rotary, extends Washington Street. Walk two short blocks south on the right (west) side of Washington. Turn right (west) on Lynde Street. In one block, cross North Street at the pedestrian light. 9 North St. is the fourth building on your left (south).
