AUSTIN, TX -- June 12, 2002 -- The
Middleware Company, the world's leading skills-transfer resource
for enterprise Java technology, today announced the electronic release
of "EJB Design Patterns," the highly-anticipated second
title in the company's continuing series of enterprise Java beans
development books.
The release of the book in electronic format on The
Middleware Company-produced Web site TheServerSide.com, the leading
online J2EE community, follows its successful March 2002 print debut.
"'EJB Design Patterns' offers best-practice solutions
to common, re-occurring problems with EJB, along with advice on designing
real-world applications and best-practice advice about the build process,"
said author Floyd Marinescu, who also serves as Director of TheServerSide.com.
Like the other books in the series, "EJB Design
Patterns" will evolve on an ongoing basis, thanks to contributions
from thousands of J2EE professionals taking part in the lively discussions
on TheServerSide.com.
"The books are developed online, through user
reviews," explained Ed Roman, CEO of The Middleware Company.
As a result - contrary even to the expectations of the book series'
publisher - the release of the electronic version is spurring sales
of the print version of "EJB Design Patterns," Roman said.
"It's a unique experiment in e-books -- we're establishing that
strategic use of e-publishing can translate to brick-and-mortar sales."
Roman authored the first book in the series, "Mastering
Enterprise JavaBeans," considered a landmark book for Java developers
worldwide. As with "EJB Design Patterns", the author made
"Mastering Enterprise Javabeans" available for download
as a PDF file shortly following its print debut. Sales of the print
edition increased following the release of the freely-available electronic
version.
Many developers have commented that after skimming
through the electronic version of "Mastering Enterprise Javabeans,"
they became convinced of the value the print book would provide. Several
reviews posted to Amazon.com indicated that buyers of the print editions
first previewed the electronic version. One reviewer commented that
after reading the first chapter of the electronic version, "I
couldn't wait to own it myself."
Shortly following the print release, "EJB Design
Patterns" became the top-selling book in Amazon.com's Java, Web
Development and Software Design categories. The book also was among
the best-selling titles at the 2002 JavaOne conference.
The book goes beyond high-level design pattern descriptions,
offering an in-depth look at critical EJB-specific implementation
issues. It contains a catalog of 20 advanced EJB patterns and offers
strategies for mapping application requirements to pattern-driven
design, along with J2EE development best practices advice and sample
source code implementations. The series aims to provide developers
with a comprehensive library of design patterns, strategies, and best
practices for EJB design and development.
