Fenton, MO -- Lockheed Martin Corporation deploys a significant percentage
of its employees overseas. In order to provide meaningful and accessible
training opportunities for these expatriates, Lockheed Martin has
partnered with Maritz Learning (www.maritzlearning.com)
to develop a performance management system accessible via the Internet.
A key business objective of the system, launched in May 2002, is to
enhance the knowledge transfer process among Lockheed Martin's professionals
working abroad.
Using a customized implementation of Maritz Learning's LIBRIX Performance
Management System, Lockheed Martin can now deliver learning
content online to this vital but geographically dispersed workforce.
Maritz Learning also developed custom content for Lockheed Martin's
new system, using Macromedia Flash to create an engaging, interactive
expatriate orientation course.
"Our employees are inundated with information that is difficult
for them to retain due to its sheer volume," commented Matt Neuman,
Senior Management Consultant, International HR for Lockheed Martin.
"The clear solution has been to make the data accessible to the
employees at their convenience so they will be more likely to both
learn and review the material. In addition, because the information
is now available 24x7 from anywhere in the world, the system provides
needed refresher opportunities."
"Businesses with widely dispersed workforces face some unique
challenges," commented Brian Carlin, President of Maritz Learning.
"Yet many issues these companies face, such as employee retention
and the alignment of learning needs with performance goals, are common
to nearly every business in every industry. The work we've done with
Lockheed Martin is an excellent example of e-learning technology being
strategically applied to overcome critical challenges to business
success."
The system provides a range of performance and learning management
functions, from the development and delivery of custom assessments
and surveys to the tracking and reporting of key business and training
metrics. A bundled authoring module provides the ability to rapidly
assemble additional courseware.
A significant advantage for delivering the courses online involves
the very real time zone differences for the worldwide employee base.
These differences range from 6 to 16 hours, making it very difficult
to coordinate time for personal conversations or training of any sort.
The system provides functions that help overcome this obstacle by
facilitating open discussion among enrollees as well as e-mail messaging.
